by Masood Ahmad 13 Oct 2025 0 Comments

Choosing the right motorcycle bag is key to a great ride. This guide will walk you through essential criteria like capacity, compatibility, and weather resistance to match luggage to your motorcycling style.

We cover everything from small commuter backpacks for daily use to large hard panniers for long-distance touring. Learn about materials, security, and legal considerations before you make a purchase.

By the end of this post, you will have a clear understanding of the best motorcycle luggage options available. This will help you select the ideal gear for your next ride with confidence.

Here is our detailed guide about motorcycle touring in the UK.

How to choose the right motorcycle bag for you?

The right motorcycle bag is the one that best fits your motorcycling style and your unique riding needs.

These are quick criteria you can use to see if a bag meets your needs.

Capacity and Use Case

See how many things you will carry with you.

Usually for a day trip, you will need a bag with a capacity range of 5L-20L. Or a backpack would be enough.

For a weekend getaway, you'll need more storage. Create a capacity of 30L-60L with a combination of small to medium saddlebags, a roll bag, and tank bag.

For a long tour or camping, you will approximately need 70L+ capacity. Since you will be packing a tent, sleeping bag, cooking equipment, toiletries, etc., use a combination of large panniers/saddlebags, a large top case, a dry roll bag, and a tank bag.

Mounting and Compatibility

Check if the bags and luggage fit your motorcycle.

Most of the bags are made bike-specific. These bags will fit only a small selection or line of motorcycles.

There are also universal-fitting bags with adjustable straps but these may compromise stability.

Weatherproofing

As a biker, you are exposed to weather and elements. Motorcycle bags must protect your belongings from water, dirt, wind, and other harms caused by weather. The bags should be waterproof or you should carry a waterproof cover for your bags.

Materials and Durability

Motorcycle bags are available in both soft and hard materials.

The soft materials for motorcycle luggage include ballistic nylon, Cordua, leather, and tarpaulin (PVC/TPU-coated fabrics). Hard motorcycle luggage materials are aluminum, ABS plastic, and polycarbonate.

Soft material luggage is lightweight, affordable and offers good flexibility. Hard material motorcycle luggage are durable, costly, more secure, and have waterproof sealing.

Safety and Visibility

It is better to choose motorcycle luggage with high visibility features, such as reflective materials or integrated lighting. This will help you stay safe in low light conditions, like rain, dark, or in the woods.

About safety, though hard luggage lasts longer, it can cause injury to the rider in a crash.

Comfort & Ergonomics

Your motorcycle luggage should keep the ride comfortable for you and the passenger (if you have one). Saddlebags and panniers don't get in the way of sitting for the rider and passenger. These are mostly ergonomic with couture for the leg.

Also, many motorcycle top boxes have a backrest for extra support.

Security

Your motorcycle luggage should offer security. Hard panniers and hard motorcycle luggage often come with a locking mechanism while soft bags have secure zipper pulls.

Legal/Insurance Considerations in the UK

There are strict legal and insurance considerations related to motorcycle luggage/bags, including its weight, dimensions, load security, and modification. The first thing you must always do is to disclose the use of any motorcycle luggage or bag in your motorcycle insurance.

Legal considerations include maximum payload you can carry, luggage weight distribution on your bike, and secure loading. Also, panniers/saddle bags should not be wider than your handlebars and the rear overhang needs to be marked with rear light and red reflector if it is more than one meter.

The most important Insurance consideration is to inform your insurer before installing new luggage/bags as these can change your insurance premium.

How to Maintain your Motorcycle luggage and Bags?

The right type of maintenance and upkeep of your motorcycle luggage will depend on the type of luggage.

For example, metal panniers require different maintenance than soft panniers/saddlebags.

Every motorcycle bag and luggage come with care instructions. Start from there. Buy the right products for maintenance and clean your motorcycle bags regularly.

One principle that will stand tall in all circumstances is to keep your luggage clean. Zipper teeth, internal corners, moisture control, and any metal parts; make sure you take care of these periodically.

Here are some suggestions on maintaining your motorcycle luggage and bags.

Cleaning and Waterproofing

Regularly clean your bags to remove dirt, mud, and road grime, which can degrade materials and clog zippers. Use a soft brush or cloth with mild soap and lukewarm water, avoiding harsh chemicals, and rinse thoroughly.

For soft textile luggage, air-dry completely before storage to prevent mold and mildew, then periodically re-apply a quality waterproofing spray to maintain water repellency, especially after cleaning.

Hardware and Zippers Care

Pay close attention to zippers, which are prone to wear. Keep the teeth clean of debris and lubricate them with a silicone-based spray or a beeswax product to ensure smooth operation and prevent sticking.

For hard luggage, inspect the mounting hardware, seals, and locking mechanisms for security. Regularly check all straps and buckles for fraying or damage, replacing them immediately to prevent bag loss while riding.

Proper Storage and Inspection

When not in use, ensure all luggage is completely dry before storage. Store bags in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight, which causes fading and material breakdown.

If storing long-term, consider lightly stuffing soft bags to help them maintain their shape. Finally, perform a quick inspection before every trip to catch any small tears or loose stitching early, ensuring your gear stays secure and lasts longer.

FAQs

How to carry bags on motorcycle?

Riders mainly rely on a variety of luggage options. The most popular ways to carry bags on a motorcycle are backpacks for light and easy commuting, panniers (side boxes/bags) for increased capacity, and top boxes (tail boxes) for secure, hard-shell storage. Messenger bags are also a common alternative.

How to install saddle bags on a motorcycle?

Always use a saddlebag kit specifically made for your motorcycle model for correct fitment, as universal parts can cause compatibility issues. To install throw-over bags, measure clearances (1-2 inches from the exhaust), remove the passenger seat to place the yolk, and secure the bags using attachment points to a solid spot like the footpeg. Adjust the yolk height to prevent rubbing.

How to use a motorcycle luggage rack?

A luggage rack is used to secure items like groceries, backpacks, or camping gear for commuting, errands, or long trips. Riders often use a bungee net permanently strapped on for convenience. Whether to use one depends entirely on your needs; if you frequently carry cargo, keep it on, but remove it for a 'cleaner' look if you only ride for fun.
